Unions for all
The union makes us strong. My father was exploited as a landscaper when I was growing up: a union would have transformed his life and my family’s life for the better. Today, I see how unions protect and empower workers in my work as a labor representative for the Oregon Education Association. Workers deserve more, so my priority is to continue strengthening the labor movement.
The record
In our first term, we ushered in transformative protections and new rights for the statewide labor movement:
- We won unemployment insurance for striking workers.
- We cracked down on bully bosses stealing wages from employees.
- We cracked down on fraudsters impersonating unions.
- We expanded paid leave in the State of Oregon.
The plan
In our next term, we will continue to raise workers’ standard of living and bring democracy to the workplace:
- We will raise the minimum wage to a living wage of $25 an hour.
- We will create public programs that support new union organizing, similar to organizations like the Emergency Workplace Organizing Committee (EWOC).
- We will end “at-will” employment for all workers statewide.
- We will win a statewide jobs guarantee.
- We will expand unemployment insurance.
- We will win paid bereavement and vacation leave.
- We will win pensions for all workers in the state of Oregon.
- We will end the classification of gig workers as “independent contractors”.
