Education for all

I am a first generation college graduate. I know how transformative a quality public education can be. I am also a labor representative for the Oregon Education Association, the largest educator union in the state. I have witnessed the crisis in our classrooms caused by Intel, Nike, and Amazon’s austerity agenda. And I know the pain it has caused students, parents, and educators alike. I will continue to fight to fully fund, not defund, education.

The record

In our first term, we won funding to support quality public education statewide:

  • We won $11.4 billion in staffing, services, and programs for our K-12 public schools.
  • We won summer learning and literacy programs for struggling readers.
  • We won targeted support for districts with low outcomes.

The plan

Despite these accomplishments, both parties continue to prioritize the austerity agenda of multinational corporations over the needs of students, educators, and families. This has exacerbated the crisis in our classrooms. Educators do not have the resources to teach, and students do not have the resources to learn. In our second term, we will win an education system that serves working people, not the wealthy and powerful:

  • We will require class sizes as a mandatory subject of bargaining for school districts.
  • We will win tuition free community colleges and public universities.
